The Pennsylvania Humanities Council designated the year 1985 as "The Year of the Pennsylvania Writer." The PHC funded projects in eight locations throughout the Commonwealth to gain appreciation, understanding, and recognition for past and present Pennsylvania writers. The State College/University Park location held a two-stage conference and related events by five Centre County regional organizations. The Office of the Registrar was established in 1949 to manage admissions, student registration and record keeping, and class scheduling, and functions were administratively distributed as enrollments grew. It was initially headed by William S. Hoffman until 1950, followed by Royal M. Gerhardt (1950-1951); deans of admissions and registrars, C. O. Williams (1952-1958) and Robert G.
