Mars Observer Library Records Collection, 1988-1993.

The bulk of the collection consists of JPL and General Electric Company reports, technical manuals, meeting minutes, specifications, memoranda, handwritten notes. This material pertains to JPL's involvement in the production and testing of the Mars Observer Spacecraft and its components. 187 5-1/4 " floppy computer disks originally included in the collection were written in an early version of the WordPerfect word processing application. In 2005 the disks were copied to CD-ROMs; then, in 2006, the JPL Archives opened the files and printed them. Some personal materials not pertiment to the Mars Observer Project were removed from the collection. The original disk were destroyed and the CD-ROMs deaccessioned. The collection is arranged in 1,174 file folders as originally sequenced. Most of the reports are bound or stapled, but many have been removed from the binders. All of the materials were originally stored in file cabinets, labeled specifically by subject matter or document number. These numbers are not found on the document cover, but on the top of the original file folder. A photocopy of the label has been included with each report. The original order has been retained, although internal evidence in these files indicated the collection was originally a part of a larger numeric-filing scheme, here incomplete. Most acronyms used are defined in Part L of Martha Martinez, editor, Abbreviations and Acronyms Guide, JPL 1030-30 Rev. A, May 1980. A copy is available in the repository.

After a 17 year gap since the last mission to Mars, NASA launched JPL's Mars Observer on September 25, 1992. The Spacecraft was based on a commercial Earth-orbiting communications satellite that had been converted into an orbiter for Mars. Mars Observer's mission was to study the surface, atmosphere, interior and magnetic field of Mars from the Martian orbit. The mission was designed to operate for one full Martian year (687 Earth days) to permit observations of the plan...
