Solar Power Salt Pond Collection, 1978-1982.

The collection includes preliminary research documentation from Ormat Turbines, the Benham Group under JPL sub-contract and the City of Davis, California on development studies of solar salt ponds. Included are JPL interoffice publications, input data for solar systems and chemical heat pipes and a study of a feasibility of a solar salt pond facility, all dating from 1978 through 1982. The primary goals of the solar pond power project with Benham-Blair and Affiliates, Inc. were to assess land availability and land values for solar pond applications throughout the United States. This constitutes one portion of an overall "U. S. Solar Pond Regional Applicability Study" that was developed by JPL in cooperation with the Department of Energy (DOE) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). There are a number of factors that JPL considered in evaluating the applicability of solar pond technology across the United States. That included technical, economic, environmental, institutional, and market sector considerations. Technical sub-factors included an evaluation of land, water, insolation, climate, geology, hydrology, design, performance, components, construction, operations and maintenance. Should be noted, however, that for some of the conditions no conclusive boundaries were given either because their effect on the feasibility of the Solar Power Pond Plant was minimal or because the limits on such conditions are highly dependent on other conditions.

The Department of Energy (DOE) is a Cabinet-level department of the United States Government responsible for energy policy and nuclear safety. Its purview includes the nation's nuclear weapons program, nuclear reactor production for the United States Navy, energy conservation, energy-related research, radioactive waste disposal, and domestic energy production, many of which are funded through its system of national laboratories. Many Federal agencies had been established to handle various aspect...

During the 1960s, salt gradient solar ponds were built and put into service in various countries of the world. Salt gradient ponds are typically large bodies of salt water, 2.5 to 5-m deep. The ponds, depending on size and depth, are capable of storing tremendous amounts of thermal energy and, therefore, can supply energy on a continuous 24-hour/day basis. The most notable ponds were located on the shores of the Dead Sea in Israel near Ein-Bokek, at Miamisburg, Ohio, and...

The Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) is a research and development center and NASA field center in Pasadena, California. The JPL is owned by NASA and managed by the nearby California Institute of Technology. The laboratory's primary function is the construction and operation of planetary robotic spacecraft, though it also conducts Earth-orbit and astronomy missions. It is also responsible for operating NASA's Deep Space Network. Among the laboratory's major active projects are the Mars Scien...
