Viking Project Post-Launch Documents Collection, 1975-1978.

The documents in this collection are arranged in nine series, and chronologically within each series. The eight series are: (1) Launch Flight Data; (2) Engineering Test Orders; (3) Lander/Orbiter Science Requirements; (4) LPAG Status Reports; (5) Lander Command and Sequencing Team (LCAST) Meeting Minutes; (6) Surface Sampler Operations Summaries; (7) Mars Physical Properties Working Group; (8) Flight Team Staffing Documents; and (9) Other Systems and Operations Documents and Reports. The documents in this collection cover topics such as reports of the measurement and strain on the Viking spacecraft during the launch, checkout and quality assurance of batteries, oven, tape recorder, and other on-board equipment during the cruise phase of the mission. Also included are Engineering Test Orders that detail the preparation and development of guidelines for science experiment requirements and approval of equipment calibration for the experiments, as wells as how the tests were to be performed, and what the projected results should look like. There are also reports of checks during cruise phase of the spacecrafts' thermal conditions, power sources, telemetry and communications links, with statements of any anomalies found. There is also documentation describing commands sent to the Viking Lander, and minutes of meetings held to coordinate the Lander science activities. The collection also includes some Viking Flight Team staffing documents. There are lists of Viking Flight Team personnel assigned to each organizational unit, giving job title, and account codes. Lastly, there is a group of miscellaneous post-launch reports and documents, many of which were generated during the Viking Extended Mission (VEM). Most of the documents contain at least one identifying number, usually a Viking Orbiter Data Index number. These are usually written in pencil in the lower right or left hand corner of the first page of each document. The Archives has a nine-volume printout of Viking documents listed by Data Index number. The listing of index numbers, although in ascending sequential order, is discontinuous. Number series are repeated several times throughout the index.
