Cuba Mission Collection, 1960-1987.

The Cuba Mission Collection consists of materials that document the work of the Board in the four Western provinces of Cuba during an unsettled time of the country's history. The collection is divided into two series: subject files and property deeds. Subject files include architectural drawings, clippings, correspondence, and pamphlets, with emphasis on the imprisonment and eventual release of HMB personnel Herbert Caudill and David Fite. The collection also includes articles and a timeline on the history of Baptist work in Cuba. Several press releases from Baptist Press and the Religious News Service provide information on the unsettled situation in Cuba and imprisonment of Caudill and Fite.

The Home Mission Board began work in Cuba in 1886. Work in the country expanded for about a decade, but by the end of the Spanish-American War in 1898, nearly all mission activity had been demoralized. At the close of the war, the Board entered an agreement with the American Baptist Home Mission Society under which the eastern half of Cuba was transferred to the Society and the SBC's Home Mission Board retained the western half.
