Personal diary, January 1, 1862-December 31, 1862. The diary covers the ten months of Sanford's active service in the Army, including voyage from Boston, MA to Ship Island, MS via Norfolk, VA in USS Constitution, during the Civil War. From there he went to New Orleans, LA, then Baton Rouge and Carrollton. He comments on the weather, his illnesses, the crew, news of Union victories at Savannah, GA and New Orleans, LA, picket duty and guard duty, skirmishes with the Confederates near Baton Rouge, the execution of a Confederate, the taking of prisoners, burning plantations, capturing supplies, his sickness and hospital stay, subsequent discharge and voyage to New York. The diary also contains a family record, date of his marriage, list of household goods, list of dates in service and where spent and Army items issued to him.
