Gwin, William McKendree, papers, 1837-1861.

Papers document William McKendree Gwin's political career in Mississippi and California. Included are a report from J. C. Wood's in El Paso describing preparations to establish a new overland mail carrier in 1858, a proposal to erect a light for San Francisco Bay in 1860, correspondence relating to California railroads, Indian depredations and the Civil War, as well as a photograph of a San Francisco building owned by Gwin.
