Around 1855 Alden B. Richardson and James W. Robbins, owners of a tin and stove store in Dover, Del., began to produce canned goods. These grew into a highly successful Richardson & Robbins Company, makers of canned fruits, vegetables, and meats. The firm also had operations in California for several years after World War I.
