Max Amichai Heppner collection, 1882-1995.

Comprised primarily of mementos and records of the Heppner family in Germany and Amsterdam, and Max and Irene Heppner's life after immigrating to the United States. Series I. Max Heppner, undated, 1937-1994. This series contains letters and documents which outline Max Heppner's life. It includes poems and drawings he did as a child as well as the manuscripts of his books, and original drawings for the books. Also includes a copy of the manuscript of Max Heppner's book as well as the original illustrations for the book, and the manuscript for an unpublished book. There are also children's books in Dutch. Series II. Albert Heppner, undated, 1918-1951. This series contains a memoir manuscript, a manuscript titled "Looking at Paintings," written while in hiding, reprints of articles he wrote, and a list of his publications. Also includes notes to relatives, poetry and official documents. Series III. Irene Heppner, undated, 1898-1995. This series contains official documents belonging to Irene Heppner or relating to her family, as well as correspondence and information about the Cleveland Museum of Art's purchase from Irene of a portion of her husband's collection of art books. Series IV. Graumann Family, undated, 1944-1995. In this series there is a memoir written by Heinz Graumann and court documents concerning the trial of the killer of Michael Graumann. There is also a memoir by Heinz Graumann (who was hidden with the Heppners) written in 1984 which includes a description of the life of prosperous Jews in Germany from the turn of the century to the Second World War. Series V. Manuscripts, undated, 1925-1992. This series contains typed manuscripts of "I Live in a Chickenhouse" and "The Submergers," two books by Max Heppner. It also contains original drawings by Max Heppner, Albert Heppner and Heinz Graumann which were used to illustrate "I Live in a Chickenhouse." Also included in the series are other drawings by Albert Heppner, which were intended to be included in the book. Series VI. Books, undated, 1882-1946. This series contains primarily children's books, in Dutch. There is also an Old Testament in Dutch.

Max Heppner was born in 1933 in Amsterdam, the only son of Dr. Albert and Irene Heppner. Albert and Irene had sought refuge in Amsterdam, leaving Berlin just before Max's birth to escape the Nazis. The Heppners lived comfortably in Amsterdam until Aug. 1942 when Irene was arrested by the Nazis. Irene was freed, but the family decided it was time to leave Amsterdam.
