Spelman family papers, 1840-1859.

Correspondence of E. G. Spelman and Eliza Spalding Spelman of Kenton, Ohio. E. G. Spelman was a lawyer and a member of the Ohio House of Representatives (Republican) and Eliza Spelman was a schoolteacher. A majority of the collection is correspondence between E.G. and Eliza Spelman during their courtship and marriage. Topics of the overall correspondence include general health concerns, meals, social engagements, their children's activities, and other small talk. A few letters discuss political events in Columbus, Ohio, and other Ohio politicians and candidates, including details of the 1856 elections. The collection includes original letters as well as typed transcripts.
