Memoir (circa 1880-1905) written by Gallaher consisting of recollections of his youth, 1827-1832, including his family's move from Westmoreland County, Pa., to Putnam County, Ill. Subjects include agriculture, neighbors, Gallaher (Gallagher) family affairs, and relations with Native Americans. Other topics include the Black Hawk War, depletion of buffalo herds in the 1870s, and Gallaher's boyhood encounter with Zachary Taylor. Includes a transcript of the memoir by Mary Gallaher Leigh (1983) and a photocopy of an undated photograph of William Gallaher.

Zachary Taylor (1784-1850), the twelfth president of the United States. In 1841, he was appointed to the command of the Sourthern Division of the United States. In the spring of 1845, Taylor appointed to command the Army of Occupation stationed in Corpus Christi. In May 1846, Taylor led his army into north Mexico.
