Isaac Shelby papers, 1792-1823.

Transcript of Shelby's account (1823) of the battle of King's Mountain during the Revolution, together with letters and certificates relating to Col. William Campbell; land grant (1795 December 1) signed by Shelby and issued to Jessee Taylor; and commission (1792 August 9) signed by Shelby appointing Priestley Gray as captain in the Kentucky militia.

Isaac Shelby, Kentucky's first governor, was born in Maryland in 1750. As a young man, he served in Lord Dunmore's War and the Revolutionary War, from which he emerge as one of the heroes of the Battle of King's Mountain, South Carolina. Following the war, he and his bride, Susannah Hart, moved to Lincoln County, Kentucky, where he quickly became a leader in Kentucky politics.
