P.A. Byrne letter, ca. 1895-1897.

Fragment (p. 5 only) of an autobiographical letter from P.A. Byrne to an unnamed association of which he was a member. He mentions work with the "Persevirance Fire Company" and recalls fires at the U.S. Capitol library (1851) and the Pension Office (1877).

The Library of Congress was established by an act of Congress in 1800 when President John Adams signed a bill providing for the transfer of the seat of government from Philadelphia to the new capital city of Washington. Patrick A. Byrne is identified as a blacksmith, 31 years of age, in the 1850 U.S. census for the District of Columbia. He also appears in the 1860 and 1880 census, first as a clerk and then as working in real estate. The city directories for 1895 and 1896 identify his occupation as librarian.
