Fred O. Brauer interview, 1984 June 27.

Brauer describes in detail the early years (1941-1942, 1945-1958) of the smokejumper program and the major problems of those years: development of equipment, the changeover from conscientious objectors to veterans following the war, and funding. He relates the changes that occurred in the 1950s and the differences with the program today.
