Letter to Samuel B. Ruggles, 1840 [June 6]

The last page of an original manuscript letter relative to the operations of canals in New York State. In particular, Hudson discussed the need to reduce the pay of engineers and problems associated with rules pertaining to payment of assessments. Ruggles and Hudson were members of the Canal Commission at the time.

Samuel Bulkley Ruggles (1800-1881) was a lawyer, public servant and real estate developer in New York City. He actively promoted public works such as the Croton Aqueduct system to bring water to New York City. As Canal Commissioner, 1839-1858, he worked to improve the Erie Canal system.
