W. Block letter, 1839 Dec. 12.

Letter to D. Sohier, a Boston lawyer, from W. Block, a New Orleans merchant, detailing the legal problems of Block's firm, Fogg and Block. Fogg and Block were contracted to sell codfish, mackerel, fish oil, and potatoes to various individuals and were not paid. The buyers contended that Fogg and Block tried to sell them spoiled merchandise, but Block said the items were fresh when sold. Block believed improper storage caused the items to be ruined. Block wrote Sohier that the firm went to trial and was compelled to sell its assets to satisfy creditors.
