William F. Montavon was born July 14, 1874 in Scioto County, Ohio, to John Baptist and Mary (Muller) Montavon. He attended Holy Redeemer parochial school from 1880-1887 and then moved on to St. Edward's College in Berlin, Ontario, until 1888. Montavon received his A.B. from Notre Dame University in 1893. The Knights of Columbus originated in New Haven, Connecticut in 1882. The group's expansion to Iowa was the result of the efforts of Patrick McArdle, Illinois state deputy director. The first Iowa council was established in Dubuque in May, 1900 followed by council in Davenport in September of the same year. Kerby was a sociologist, writer, editor, and organizer of Catholic social work. He was born in Lawler, Iowa in 1870 to Daniel and Ellen (Rochford) Kerby. He studied for the priesthood at St. Francis Seminary, Milwaukee, and was ordained in Dubuque on 21 December 1892.
