Lydia Sigourney letters and poems, 1854-1861.

Two letters written by poet and Hartford, Connecticut, resident Lydia Sigourney. One letter is addressed to a Dear Young Friend, in which Lydia commends the person for pursuing intellectual improvement. The second letter is addressed to Reverend and Dear Sir (presumed to be Charles Sprague) and praised him for his writing abilities. The two poems are entitled "Niagara" and "The Spoiler", the latter about the death of a child.

Lydia Huntley Sigourney (born September 1, 1791, Norwich, Connecticut–died June 10, 1865, Hartford, Connecticut), poet, also known as the “Sweet Singer of Hartford", was the only daughter of a gardener. She attended private school with the assistance of her father’s employer, and founded a Hartford school for girls in 1814.
