Letter: to H. H. Bancroft /by William Passmore Carlin, 1884 Nov 14.

The letter relates the experiences of Col. William Carlin, 4th Infantry, Brevet Major General, from his arrival, as a lieutenant in the 6th Regiment of Infantry at Fort Laramie in 1855, at the time of the expedition against the Sioux, until 1858 when the 6th Infantry was sent to Fort Bridger to reinforce Gen. Albert Sidney Johnston, and on to California.

Ezekial Thatcher was clerk of the Parkville School District, Shasta County, Calif. He emigrated to California from Pennsylvania in 1850 and helped establish the first school district in the Parkville area. He is descended from the Thatchers of Uffington, England, the same family as Denis Thatcher, husband of British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. From the description of H.H. William P. Carlin was born at Rich Woods in Greene County, Illinois, and educated in the local schools. His parents were William B. Carlin (1804-1850) and Mary Carlin (née Goode, 1805-1888). His uncle Thomas Carlin, a Jacksonian Democrat and veteran of the War of 1812 served as Illinois' governor when William was a boy.
