Logbook and journal documenting the H.M.S. Investigator's expeditions along the Niger River and the activities of members of its crew. The journal, kept by N. Child, a Master's Assistant on the ship, is titled "Journal of the H.M.S. Investigator" and contains dated narrative entries detailing his activities and his impressions of West Africa. The logbook, kept by midshipman William A. Ewbank, contains formal log entries, drawings, and a multipage map documenting his service aboard both the Rattlesnake and the Investigator. Both Child and Ewbank discuss the British attempts to suppress the slave trade; a number of treaties signed with local leaders; local trade and tariffs; and battles between the British and the Possoo. In addition, Ewbank describes the Rattlesnake's efforts to strengthen Monrovia's defenses against the Ashanti; Child narrates his meeting with Richard F. Burton in February of 1864.
