The Connecticut Society for Mental Hygiene was founded in New Haven, Connecticut, in 1908 by Clifford Beers with a small group of followers and the assistance of Dr. Anson Phelps Stokes. Beers, a Yale graduate who had been a patient in public and private mental hospitals in Connecticut for three years, sought to correct the abuses he encountered.
