Ezekiel J. Chapman papers, 1799-1859.

Ezekiel J. Chapman's papers consist of two manuscript accounts documenting his preaching, travel, and religious progress from 1799 to 1818, and from 1830 to 1859. The first volume appears to be transcribed from various original diaries; the second likely functioned as an original diary itself. In the volumes, Chapman reports in detail about his religious work, specifying texts preached on at recorded locations; exchanges with named colleagues; religious duties performed, such as marriages, baptisms, funerals, and ministerial installations; counseling the ill; and travel to specified conferences. Chapman also recorded miles traveled on his journeys, and recorded the amount of church collections taken up for him when visiting other congregations. Occasional entries document life events in the Chapman household, but the accounts focus on Chapman's schedule of religious actions and his travels. In addition to these work entries, Chapman annually summarized his religious state and thoughts on his age on his birthday.
