[Journal of proceedings in the House of Commons], [6 March to 27 May 1679].

Manuscript, in a single hand, of a journal of proceedings in the House of Commons from March 6 to May 27, 1679, many of them related to anti-Catholic matters. The manuscript begins with a message from King Charles II summarizing his concessions, including the exclusion of "Popish Lords" from their seats in Parliament, the execution of several men in connection with the Popish Plot and the murder of Sir Edmund Bury Godfrey, and the alienation of his brother in order to remove all causes which could appear to influence him toward Catholic counsels. Other activities recorded by the journal include petitions to the House of Commons concerning undue returns of candidates to Parliament, which are to be referred to the Committee of Privileges and Elections; descriptions of trials; and the appointments of committees, including one to examine the misdimeanors of Nicholas Conyers, high sheriff of Durham "in setting at liberty so many papists" during the recent election; others to examine the authors of seditious pamphlets; one to inspect the journal of the House of Lords for any orders concerning giving copies to the Lords in the Tower of examinations of witnesses against them; and another to investigate the cause of recent fires in the city of London.
