Keepsake album containing mounted ALS to Clement Shorter, St.George's Lodge, Worthing, 1900 Mar 15, submitting verses "for the coming Sphere" and hoping that they can be prefaced with "two or three sentences from Fortescue's History of the British Army." Laid in: newspaper clipping notice of Henley's funeral.

William Ernest Henley was born in Gloucester, and sufferred from a painful condition in his joints; his left leg was amputated when he was eighteen, and the right leg was saved only through experimental treatments of carbolic acid. He was accepted to Oxford, but couldn't afford to attend, and he tried to earn a living as an author, writing poetry and drama with some success. Shorter, Clement King, 1857-1926

Shorter worked as an editor with a number of British papers and journals, such as the ILLUSTRATED LONDON NEWS, before founding and editing three early twentieth century journals: SKETCH, SPHERE, and the TATLER.
