[Journal], 1824-1828.

Holograph diary of a series of trips taken by the writer and family between June 1824 and November 1828. The writer, quite possibly a woman, details travel arrangements, accomodations, sights seen and expenses incurred for "Ourselves, 6 children and 3 servants" on several expeditions, mainly in the Swiss and Italian Alps. The family visited Chillon, where the dungeons "do not come up to Lord Byron's telling--they are not very dark;" Chamonix and Mont Blanc; Interlacken, Berne and Lausanne. The writer describes natural beauties, local costumes and customs, inns, and other travelers. In 1828 the family traveled from Lake Leman to Milan via the Simplon Pass, and from Milan to Como, through various German cities, and via Belgium back to London by steamer. On this trip, the diarist was particularly interested in cultural sightseeing, describing the Ambrosian Library, works by Raphael, Holbein and Rubens, and the churches and altarpieces of Cologne. The notebook also contains lists of sights seen at Versaille and Lausanne and of teachers of various subjects in the same towns.
