Collection of about 150 extracts in verse and prose on such subjects as love, sorrow, mortality, and moral behavior. Prose excerpts include those from Dickens' Nicholas Nickleby, which the manuscript labels by "Boz," as well as extensive selections from Bulwer-Lytton's prose works. The volume also contains numerous verses by Bulwer-Lytton and Thomas Moore; excerpts from Coleridge's Dejection: An Ode; excerpts from Byron's Childe Harold; Walter Scott's Bride of Lammermoor; and Felicia Hemans' The Better Land.
