The Duke of Florence: a tragedy, [ca. 1800].

Autograph manuscript, lightly corrected, of a tragic play in five acts, concerning Cosmo, the Duke of Florence [Cosimo de'Medici I, Grand-Duke of Tuscany]. The jealous Garcia plans to murder the favored Carlos during a mock battle staged by Carlos. Their father Cosmo, torn between leaving Carlos's death unavenged and the act of killing his own son in punishment for the fratricide, ultimately resolves to kill Garcia. Meanwhile Zaphrida, the wife of Garcia, kills herself, as does Carlos' wife Isabella. A postscript discusses the historical basis for the fictionalized tragedy, citing the French "Histoire de Monsieur de Thou" by Thuanus [Jacques-Auguste de Thou]: two of the sons of Cosmo, John [Giovanni, (1543-1562 Nov 20)] and Garcia [Garzia, (1547-1562 Dec 12)] are said alternatively to have become involved in a dispute while hunting resulting in Garcia's murder of John, and Cosmo's killing of Garcia in revenge, after which he concealed his sons' deaths with a rumor that they had died of an illness. Alternatively, they are said to have died of malaria while traveling to Pisa with their mother.
