Album containing family correspondence to and concerning Lady Mary (Walker) Hamilton, assembled by her grandson Adolphe Thibault. Correspondents include her children James, David, Melville, Leslie, Isabelle, Sophie and Betsey and their spouses; George Carnegie of Creighton; and various Scottish and French descendants. Topics include the family's often strained financial affairs and legal difficulties; the marital problems of James, David, Isabelle and Betsey; the welfare of family members during the French Revolution; the administration of Lady Mary's West Indian plantations and her voyage to the West Indies at an advanced age; the frequent estrangements between Lady Mary and her children; and inheritances. The first 95 letters in the album date from between 1793 and 1817 and concern Lady Mary and her children directly. The remaining 45 are from various more distant relatives to her grandson Adolphe Thibault. Written between 1829 and 1863, they concern his researches into Walker family history and contain anecdotes of Lady Mary and her relatives and answers to genealogical questions originally posed by Thibault. There are also several copies of his responses to these letters, one of which refers to his grandmother's life as a "horrid page of human profligacy."
