George Weidman Groff received his bachelor's and master's degrees in horticulture from Penn State. He pioneered the idea of agricultural missions under Christian auspices and in 1907 became the first agricultural missionary to China. In 1921, he helped organize the Lingnan Agricultural College with a faculty of western-trained Chinese.
