Joseph R. Hanson letters relating to the Upper Missouri Sioux, 1868-1869.

Autograph manuscript letters dated 1868 and 1869 relating to Hanson's work as Indian agent for the Upper Missouri Sioux, written primarily from the Crow Creek Agency, principally addressed to General David Sloane Stanley, commander at Fort Sully, and to Andrew Jackson Faulk, Governor of Dakota and Superintendant of Indian Affairs at Yankton, and his successor, John A. Burbank. The letters, which are office copies, relay information about the movements of Indian tribes in and near Hanson's agency (Dakota, Miniconjou, Sans Arc, Two Kettle, Yankton, and Blackfeet), and report such news as the murder of two white men, allegedly by Yankton Indians, thefts of horses and oxen, and delays in the arrival of supplies for the Sioux. The collection also includes a letter from General Stanley summarizing the state of Indian tribes in the area in March, 1868.
