Comte de Barbançon letters to Humphry Marshall, [17--]-1796.

ALS, Paris, France, undated; and AL, Brussels, Belgium, written in an unidentified hand and signed "Earl of Barbançon," with an enclosed list, 1796 Mar 30. Both letters request seeds from plants native to North America to be sent to Barbançon and other French botanists. The letters include lists of types of seeds and discuss seeds previously received from Marshall, methods of packing, and arrangements for payment.

Humphry Marshall was a botanist, member of the American Philosophical Society, and author of Arbustrum Americanum: the American Grove. He lived in Chester County, Pennsylvania. Humphry Marshall was a self-educated Quaker botanist, born and raised in Chester County, Pa. With the encouragement and assistance of his cousin, John Bartram, and other scientific mentors in the U.S. and Britain, Marshall became an accomplished "practical botanist" and by the mid-1760's had established a profitable business collecting and identifying plants and selling them to plant collectors throughout the U.S. and Europe.
