Alexander Maxwell Montgomery prize ticket and wooden stamp, 1812-[18--].

Printed prize ticket filled out in manuscript and signed by David Porter awarding Dr. Montgomery a share in the ransom of the Transport Brig Samuel & Sarah and the Sloop of War Alert, and to a share in all bounties for vessels destroyed and head money for prisoners taken between 2 July and 12 Sept. 1812. Accompanied by a wooden stamp, with A M Montgomery carved in relief on two sides, his initials carved on either end in script.

Dr. Montgomery served as acting Surgeon's mate on the US Frigate Essex under Captain David Porter in the War of 1812. He fought with Poter in the harbor of Valparaiso in 1814, and in the defense of Washington. He was later Commander of the Naval Hospital at Brooklyn. David Porter, U.S. naval officer, was born in 1780 and entered the Navy in 1798. He fought in the Tripolitan War and the War of 1812 abd against West Indian pirates.
