Arthur Twining Hadley was born in New Haven, Connecticut on April 23, 1856. He graduated from Yale in 1876, and pursued graduate studies in political economy at the University of Berlin. Howard Roberts Lamar, historian of the trans-Mississippi West, was born in Tuskegee, Alabama in 1923. He received a B.A. from Emory University in 1944, and a Masters (1945) and Ph.d. Kingman Brewster was born in Longmeadow, Massachusetts on June 17, 1919. He received his undergraduate degree from Yale in 1941 and his law degree from Harvard in 1948. Brewster taught law at Harvard from 1949-1960. He served as provost of Yale from 1961-1963 and was president of Yale from 1963-1977. Brewster was U.S. ambassador to Great Britain from 1977-1981.
