William W. Plumb diary and related papers, 1852-1893.

Manuscript diary written by William W. Plumb, containing entries for May-June, 1852, and December, 1856-March, 1857. Entries for 1852 describe his arrival in Washington Territory, travel to Olympia, and establishment of his land claim near Olympia. Brief entries for 1856-1857 report weather conditions at his ranch; a few also mention names of neighbors. The diary is annotated "Fragment of diary written by William W. Plumb, Centralia, Washington, April 4, 1900," in a different hand. Related papers are a TLS from R.G. O'Brien, Adjutant General, National Guard of Washington, "to whom it may concern," January 30, 1893, certifying Plumb's service in the Indian war of 1855-1856; and a portrait photograph of Plumb, made by T.R. Williams, Centralia, Washington, [ca. 1890?], with biographical notes written in an unidentified hand on verso. The diary and papers are accompanied by brief notes of a former owner.

William W. Plumb was born in New York in 1809. He was a pioneer in Washington Territory, settling near Olympia in 1852. He served as a private in the United States Army, 2nd Infantry Regiment, during the Indian war in Washington Territory, 1855-1856, and he was appointed first justice of the peace at Olympia.
