Volume containing holograph manuscript diaries of Indian campaigns, with related writings and transcripts, written by Elias Viles while a soldier in the United States Army 1st Cavalry, K Troop, at Fort Leavenworth, later Kansas Territory. Contents include "Journal of a Campaign to the Cherokee Nation, Ark.," April 17-July 10, 1842; "Journal of a March in Pursuit of the [Charvis?] Rob[b]ers," regarding pursuit of robbers on the Santa Fe Trail, April 3-9, n.y.; "Journal of a Campaign to the Mexican Lines," Santa Fe Trail, May 27-July 21 1843; "Journal of a Campaign to the Pawnee Villages," Platte River, Nebraska, August 12-September 17, 1844; and "Hospital, Fort Leavenworth, Mo.," October 19-November 20, 1844. Also present are "Ambrose Spencers Jr. Journal," a diary written by a member of Snively's Expedition, April 25-July 1, 1843, apparently transcribed by Viles; a description of a Dragoon Campaign, 1839, Platte River, discussing Oto, Iowa, and Pawnee Indians; writings on army life and his experiences in the West, n.d.; and poems and notes, 1841-1846 and n.d.
