Personal log : on board the U.S.S. Cyane, 1841-1842.

Bound ms. (44 p.) beginning with the departure from Norfolk and ending after a visit to Santa Barbara, with a description of the events at Monterey in October, 1842: the taking of the town and the swift reversal. Clymer also describes the cruise around the Cape, noting other ships, ports visited, earthquakes felt off Coquimbo, Chile in July, and Lima, Peru in September 1842. There is also a detailed description of Santa Barbara. With two pages of the mess bill for officers of the Cyane, and a page of distances traveled.

The U.S.S. Cyane was launched December 2, 1837. During the Mexican-American War she carried John C. Fremont's California Battalion to San Diego, La Paz, and Mazatlan before returning to Norfolk in 1848. The Cyane was decommissioned in 1871. George Clymer, a Naval surgeon, was assigned to the sloop-of-war Cyane, part of the Pacific Squadron under Commodore Thomas Ap Catesby Jones. The Cyane left Norfolk, sailed around Cape Horn, and joined Jones in taking possession of Monterey, California in October, 1842, under the mistaken assumption that the United States was at war with Mexico.
