Hutterite-Harmony correspondence, 1875-1893.

Letters and related papers of the Hutterite Brethren and Harmony Society written after the Hutterites emigrated to the Dakota Territory. The letters concern the business affairs of the Hutterites, including loans acquired from the Harmonists for the establishment of mills and other agricultural efforts. Primary correspondents include Jacob Henrici and Jonathan Lenz, Trustees of the Harmony Society, and Hutterite leaders Jakob, Joseph, and Michael Waldner, Jacob Hofer, Philipp Jasmann, as well as William Merkle of the Economy Oil Company. Letters were written from Bon Homme County, Odessa, Freeman, and Yankton, Dakota Territory; and Economy and Tidioute, Pennsylvania.

The original German, utopian community, Harmonie Society, arrived in Pennsylvania in the 1780s, relocated to New Harmony, Indiana, in 1814. It established a final home, Economy, near Ambridge, in western Pennsylvania, in 1825. The Society prospered through 1868, dissolving itself in 1905 after membership declined.
