Journal, 1866-1873.

The journal describes Francis Hutchinson's work as chainman and rodsman on the construction of the Northern Pacific Railroad in Minnesota, as chainman on a government survey of the Marsh and Sand Hill Rivers, and as assistant inspector of ties of the Dakota Division. The text is illustrated with drawings and photographs of scenery, camps, and Indians. There are notes on his visits to New Jersey, 1873, and writings, 1866-71. Laid in the book are papers about the Indian problem and his jobs.

Francis McCredy Hutchinson, from Philadelphia, attended the Agricultural College at Pennsylvania (later Pennsylvania State College). He worked in Minnesota and eastern Dakota in the 1870s, returned to Philadelphia and worked on the Philadelphia Record, and entered the real estate business in 1890.
