Scott Briar papers, 1957-1981.

The Scott Briar papers document many stages of Briar's career and contain correspondence, speeches and writings, conference and convention materials, subject files, case files, and photographs. The papers also include documentation of the establishment of a Ph. D. program in social welfare at the University of Washington School of Social Work; records from the National Association of Deans and Directors of Schools of Social Work; and correspondence, editorials, and meeting files regarding the publication Social Work.

Joseph Scott Briar was born in 1926 and died in 1998. He received his master's degree in social work from Washington University, St. Louis, in 1952 and his doctorate in social welfare from Columbia University in 1961. Between degrees, Briar worked as a psychiatric social worker and supervisor for the Menninger Foundation in Topeka, Kansas.
