D.H. Lawrence letter and photograph to George Conway, 10 June 1925.

The collection consists of a handwritten and signed letter from D.H. Lawrence to George Conway, 10 June, 1925, from the Del Monte Ranch, Valdez, New Mexico. Included with the letter is a photograph of Lawrence with his cow, Susan, and Frieda's nephew, Friedel Jaffe. D.H. Lawrence writes to Conway about life in New Mexico, progress on his Mexico novel (The Plumed Serpent), and mentions the devastating illness he contracted in Oaxaca. George Conway was an English civil engineer. He became manager of the Mexican Light and Power Company in 1916, and wrote about Mexican history. He and his wife befriended the Lawrences in Mexico City in 1925, and were helpful when Lawrence became ill.

David Herbert Richards Lawrence was born September 11, 1885, in Eastwood, near Nottingham, to Arthur Lawrence, a coal miner, and Lydia Beardsall. He attended Nottingham University College, and in 1908 he took a teaching position at Davidson Road School in Croydon. Lawrence wrote in his spare time, and in 1911, with the help of Ford Maddox Hueffer, he published his first novel, The White Peacock .
