This collection documents the activities of and issues before the International Executive Board (IEB) of the United Mine Workers of America (UMW). It consists primarily of three categories of material: packets and related files pertaining to IEB meetings, including correspondence, meeting summaries and agendas, circulars, financial documents, and voting records; transcripts of those meetings; and approximately 10,000 membership restoration cases reviewed by the Board. Photographs comprise 13 images from a memorial dedicated to former UMW president John Mitchell in 1924 and 6 images of Storer College in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, in 1958.

John Mitchell was born in Braidwood, Ill., on February 4, 1870. Between the ages of twelve and twenty he worked in the coal mines of Illinois, Colorado, and other states. Mitchell joined the United Mine Workers of America upon its founding in 1890, became an Illinois sub-district official in 1894, and was elected national vice-president in 1898. Storer College was a historically black college located in Harper's Ferry, West Virginia. The Home Mission Society of the Free Baptist Church founded it in 1867 to educate former slaves.
