Research materials, compiler unidentified, relating to James H. Godman (1808-1891), lawyer and state legislator, of Marion, Ohio. He was born in Berkley County, W. Va., and moved to Ohio with his parents, passing the Ohio bar in 1828 when he moved to Marion. At the age of 53 he enlisted in Apr., 1861 and raised a company of 110 soldiers which became Company K of the 4th Ohio Volunteers where he served in Virginia with McClellan as a field officer. He resigned July 28, 1863 with the rank of Colonel after taking shrapnel in his leg during the storming of Marye's Heights at the Battle of Fredericksburg and was brevetted to the rank of Brigadier General. According to local historical writings he came within a few votes in 1862 of an election to U.S. Congress and served as Ohio state auditor for eight years. The research covers the years 1808 to 1999 when it was completed.
