The majority of Grotewiel's collection concerns his work on the Energy and Natural Resources Committee while serving in the Kansas House of Representatives. Records include correspondence, articles and other reference material, newspaper clippings and copies of other publications and informational sources, handwritten notes, copies of legislative bills, and other records. Topics of interest and other organizations of concern are the Citizens Utility Board, the Kansas Natural Resources Council, nuclear energy and waste, water, mining reclamation, appropriations and budgets for various state agencies, etc. The collection also includes constituent correspondence, both incoming and outgoing, as well as questionnaires sent to constituents with their totaled responses, and mass mailings. Much of the material is organized by subject or chronologically; some of it is organized by House or Senate bill number.

Ken Grotewiel was born in 1949. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology from the Southern Illinois University in Carbondale in 1971. He was a Kansas State Representative (Democrat) from 1983-1994, Director of the Consumer Division of the Kansas Insurance Department from 1998-2002, and Assistant Director of the Kansas Water Office from 2003-2007.
