Mah-Jongg [realia]. 1923 circa

Mah-jongg set was handmade around 1923. The 144 tiles are ivory backed with bamboo. The pieces are in a wooden box of Chinese manufacture with brass metal pieces at the corners and sides. Three applied brass butterflies or moths decorate the exterior of the box. There are two metal handles. A brass flower-shaped plate on the sliding front panel of the box is engraved: "PRESENTED / TO / WARREN G. HARDING / PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES / BY / UNITED PARLOR / NATIVE SONS OF THE GOLDEN STATE / SAN FRANCISCO. CAL 1923." Inside there are five drawers. A hand case with the set is covered with leather and has brass fixtures. A card with the case is printed: "FROM C. & A. TRUNK CO. STOCKTON & JACKSON STS. SAN FRANCISCO. CALIFORNIA." Typewritten on the card is: "Hon Warren G. Harding. Palace Hotel, San Francisco, Cal."
