The Council on Research was formed in 1928 to coordinate research across the college. This group also advised the president on distributing funding to various projects. In 1949, committee members included a dean from each undergraduate school, directors of research in the various schools, the College treasurer, and the librarians. The Pennsylvania Humanities Council designated the year 1985 as "The Year of the Pennsylvania Writer." The PHC funded projects in eight locations throughout the Commonwealth to gain appreciation, understanding, and recognition for past and present Pennsylvania writers.
