Catherine Anna Louise Jarrott was born in Los Angeles, California, on August 6, 1925. She started her academic career at Los Angels City College, earning her A.A. degree in 1945, followed by her Bachelor's degree in English at the University of California - Los Angeles in 1947, and her M.A. and Ph.D. in English from Stanford University in 1949 and 1954.
