The majority of the records from the Office of the State Bank Commissioner relate to the regular reporting every bank is required to do for both the state of Kansas and for the FDIC. Other significant series from this agency are concerned with bank receivership and banks going into litigation or undergoing reorganization, both individually and in the aggregate. The records span the entirety of the office's existence up to nearly the present day. The Kansas State Banking Department came into existence in 1891 by act of the state legislature, its duties and responsibilities overseen by the Bank Commissioner. These duties included the supervision of the state banks of Kansas and the many private banks then in operation. Private banks slowly went out of existence, and in 1929 the legislature passed a law prohibiting the creation of new private banks.
