ArchivalResource

Johann Ludwig Wernhard Fäsch portrait drawings of the French stage, ca. 1760-1775.

Ca. 366 pen and ink tracings of drawings onto paper, and some onto sheet gelatine. Each drawing or sketch is tipped onto a blank card, then fixed onto a page in the album, though some are now loose. Most images are 8 x 12 cm.; the album is 61 x 43 cm. It is speculated that these drawings predate Fäsch's watercolors and engravings of the same images. Title page: Calques de Costumes du Théâtre Français de l'Opera et de l'Opera Comique XVIII Siecle d'apres... Subjects of the drawings are actors and actresses in various roles from the Comédie-Française, Comédie-Italienne (Paris, France), Opéra-Comique (Paris, France), Opéra de Paris, and Théâtre-Italien (Paris, France). Many drawings are identified with manuscript annotations as to actor, character role, and the play presented (probably same hand as note inside front cover with date 1894 March 20). Actors and actresses depicted include: Brizard, Dauberval, Mlle Dumesnil, Lekain, Molé, Monvel, Préville, and many others.
