Josiah Smith papers, 1836-1874.

The present collection provides only fragmentary evidence of Smith's long and varied career. His 1812 service appears through his pension application, accompanied by a few letters from the pension office. All that remains of his militia activities are some orders issued in the 1870's, his bills for music performed at drills between 1830 and 1874, four manuscript music pieces, and newspaper clippings. Most of the evidence is contained in an account book kept between 1825 and 1832, which records both his cobbler's and musician's fees. Another small volume records the auction sale of Smith's Lexington farm in 1862. Smith's Maine land investment and its accompanying bankruptcy proceedings can be followed through a small number of documents, bills, receipts and statements brought together in 1842.
