Legal and financial records relate to Margaret Borland's activities during the last half of the nineteenth century as owner of one of the largest herds of cattle in Texas and as one of the first women to go up the trail to Kansas.

Margaret Heffernan Borland was born in Ireland on April 3, 1824. She came to Texas with her family in 1829 and settled in San Patricio. She was married and widowed three times and had 7 children. After her last husband (Alexander Borland) died in 1867, she took over his cattle business in Victoria. She is said to be the only woman to have led a cattle drive. In 1873, she drove a herd of cattle to Wichita, Kansas. She dies in 1873 in Wichita after the drive and is buried in Victoria, Texas. ...
